4Science speaks German
As recently announced, The Library Code has decided to conclude its activities. Following this transition, several team members have chosen to continue their journey with 4Science. It is with great excitement that we welcome the former team members of The Library Code Pascal Becker, Peter Wolfersberger, Kim Shepherd, and Yannick Paulsen to the 4Science team. Bringing together many decades of combined experience in DSpace, repositories, and institutional support, they will strengthen 4Science from both technical development and client successperspectives.
The idea
To be clear, this is not a merger or acquisition between the two companies. Rather, it is the addition of experienced professionals who have decided to contribute their expertise and continue supporting Open Access and the community through 4Science. At the same time, we recognize that this marks a change for the broader DSpace community. While the ecosystem has to say goodbye to a long-standing provider, we are pleased that this expertise remains active within the community and continues contributing to the growth and evolution of DSpace.
University of St.Gallen and 4Science modernize research systems on AWS
The University of St.Gallen wanted to make publications, projects, and researcher profiles discoverable through academic search engines. So it decided to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) to modernize its long-running institutional repository, Alexandria, which became harder to maintain. Working alongside AWS Software Partner 4Science, the Swiss institution migrated from EPrints to DSpace-CRIS. The migration helped the university preserve its open source approach, reduce the burden of infrastructure management, and sustain public access to its research.
Alexandria continues to hold the strong search rankings it carried over from the EPrints era. And the structured DSpace-CRIS data model gives the university a richer way to represent the full scope of its research output. Consolidated into a single scalable repo, publications, projects, and researcher profiles remain findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Having established a long-term service relationship, the partner and the Swiss institution work to keep Alexandria stable, open source, and sustainable. “4Science is not a faceless support ticket jungle if you are in trouble,” says Ruedi Lindegger, repository manager at University of St.Gallen.
Cultural Narratives Evolve: Introducing Storytelling
DSpace-GLAM continues to expand the ways cultural heritage can be explored and experienced with its latest update. More than just a digital library, DSpace-GLAM is a software where cultural heritage comes to life, enabling stories to be discovered, shared, and passed across generations. Designed to support galleries, libraries, archives, and museums, DSpace-GLAM transforms documents, images, audio, and video into a connected ecosystem, where resources interact with one another and gain new layers of meaning.
The new Storytelling section is built on the idea that every item preserved by a cultural institution represents far more than an object to be stored and accessed. A photograph tells the story of people and places; a manuscript evokes events, knowledge, and historical contexts. Every detail, punctuation mark, annotation, or hidden note can become the starting point for new paths of discovery, revealing connections that might otherwise go unnoticed.
