4Science Speaks German: At 4Science, our commitment to the DSpace community and Open Access has always gone beyond technology. It is built on people, shared expertise, and a common goal of advancing open infrastructure for institutions worldwide.

The background

4Science Speaks German: As recently announced, The Library Code has decided to conclude its activities. Following this transition, several team members have chosen to continue their journey with 4Science. It is with great excitement that we welcome the former team members of The Library Code Pascal Becker, Peter Wolfersberger, Kim Shepherd, and Yannick Paulsen to the 4Science team. Bringing together many decades of combined experience in DSpace, repositories, and institutional support, they will strengthen 4Science from both technical development and client success perspectives.

The idea

To be clear, this is not a merger or acquisition between the two companies. Rather, it is the addition of experienced professionals who have decided to contribute their expertise and continue supporting Open Access and the community through 4Science. At the same time, we recognize that this marks a change for the broader DSpace community. While the ecosystem has to say goodbye to a long-standing provider, we are pleased that this expertise remains active within the community and continues contributing to the growth and evolution of DSpace.

Our vision

Pascal Becker, founder and former CEO of The Library Code: “When we realized we had to shut down The Library Code, we thought about how we could continue doing what we love so much: supporting this amazing open-source community and helping to make humanity’s knowledge openly available. This shared vision was the reason for me to approach 4Science while looking for a good solution for my team, our clients, and the DSpace community.”

Andrea Bollini, COO of 4Science: “When the team from The Library Code reached out to us, we didn’t hesitate to find a solution to bring them on board, keeping their experience and knowledge at the service of the DSpace community. With these new colleagues joining the team, 4Science welcomes two DSpace committers, further strengthening our long-term commitment to the DSpace project and open-source sustainability. We share a passion for open source, open access, and open science. All 4Science staff are required to be active in the community, helping the DSpace community to advance and stay relevant in the scholarly ecosystem.”

Cesare Valenti, CEO of 4Science: “Over the years, The Library Code and 4Science collaborated on many projects supporting European institutions and contributed together to important developments within the DSpace ecosystem. Their experience across development, implementation, and client support adds valuable expertise that will benefit both current and future institutions working with DSpace.

 The future ahead

We are excited about the future ahead, the new perspectives these team members will bring to 4Science, and the opportunity to support even more institutions around the world.

With this expansion, the 4Science team now provides support in Italian, English, German, and Spanish, allowing us to serve institutions globally with even greater proximity and expertise.

Welcome to the team!
