There are major updates about COAR Notify in the DSpace and DSpace-CRIS platforms.

From June 21st , 2024, DSpace 8 is available to the public with many major updates, one of which is the implementation of the COAR NOTIFY Protocol. Its implementation has been entrusted to 4Science.The implementation plan was presented at the Open Repositories conference in 2023.

The COAR NOTIFY Protocol in DSpace 8

The implementation of the COAR Notify Protocol in DSpace 8 is out-of-the-box and facilitates seamless, automated notifications for content exchange and updates between repositories and other platforms. This protocol is essential for enhancing interoperability in scholarly communication by providing a standardized way to notify systems about the status and actions related to digital objects. Key features in DSpace 8 include:

  • Automated Event Notifications: Supports real-time notifications for events like publication, updates, or content modifications.
  • Interoperability: Enables smooth interaction between DSpace and other systems (e.g., repositories, data platforms) through standardized notifications.
  • Enhanced Discoverability: Improves the visibility and access of digital objects by ensuring that changes and new content are promptly communicated to interested parties.
  • Customizable Triggers: Allows administrators to set specific events that will trigger notifications, providing flexibility in managing repository content workflows.

The COAR NOTIFY Protocol in DSpace 7

In DSpace 7, the COAR Notify Protocol has been integrated through a patch in the 7.6.1 version (to be updated once 7.6.2 is out), enabling similar functionality as seen in DSpace 8 but adapted for the DSpace 7 infrastructure. 4Science/coar-notify-integration: Used to keep track of the COAR Notify Integration (

The COAR NOTIFY Protocol in DSpace-CRIS

DSpace-CRIS is a free open-source extension of DSpace providing additional features out-of-the-box. In DSpace-CRIS, the COAR Notify Protocol enables automated, real-time notifications across systems and platforms, enhancing research information management. The COAR Notify Protocol is available in DSpace-CRIS since version 2024.01.00, based on DSpace 7. This integration supports automated notifications for research outputs and updates, enhancing interoperability and communication within the research ecosystem.

The Future of COAR NOTIFY in DSpace

Continuous improvements are what makes DSpace the leader repository platform in the repository’s realm. That is why 4Science, as the lead contributor to the DSpace community, already presented a pull request for improvements and additional implementations of the COAR Notify Protocol in DSpace 9. DSpace Release 9.0 Status – DSpace – LYRASIS Wiki. In the advent of fast technological developments, is crucial to never stop improving and search for better functionalities that support the needs and requirements of every institution. Thanks to a worldwide amazing community such as DSpace, everything is possible!
