We’re excited to share 4Science’s contributions to the DSpace Community in October 2026. These updates are here to help make your DSpace experience smoother, safer, and more reliable.
4Science DSpace community contributions update October 2026: Preparing for DSpace 11: The “Unified Relationship” Era
The main update for Repository Administrators is our progress on the DSpace 11 Merger. We’re working to bring together how DSpace manages relationships between items. The biggest technical change right now is the Unified Relationship Model, which will make it easier to connect researchers, publications, and organizations.
- Unified Relationship Model: We’ve been working closely with the community to create one strong way to manage links between entities. This will make your repository more flexible and simpler to manage.
- Journal Hierarchy: In DSpace 10, we added a four-level hierarchy (Journal, Volume, Issue, Article). This setup is the model for the more advanced structures planned for DSpace 11.
- Performance & Stability: Our team found and fixed several important technical issues, such as NullPointerExceptions, to make sure these new relationship features won’t slow down your repository.
New Features for DSpace 10
4Science DSpace community contributions update October 2026: We’re still supporting the current version. We’ve added several improvements to DSpace 10 to make things better for both admins and researchers:
- PDF Metadata Extraction (GROBID): The GROBID integration is now available. You can automatically pull out metadata, such as titles and authors, just by dragging and dropping a PDF into the submission form. This saves time and helps avoid manual entry mistakes.
- Enhanced Citations: We’re developing a new feature that lets users export item pages directly into popular citation formats like Chicago, APA, BibTeX, and EndNote.
- Dynamic Layouts: If you want to customize your repository’s look and feel, our new Configurable Layouts feature is now being reviewed by the community. It lets you set up displays for different entities using simple spreadsheets.
Security & Reliability
Keeping your data safe is our top priority. We worked on fixing a major security issue with “Request Item” tokens that could have exposed files to unauthorized users. We also improved the Audit Logs so actions like changing a community or collection logo are now fully traceable.
Modernizing Communication
We’re leading the community effort to add XOAUTH2 support for Gmail and Outlook. This will help your repository keep sending emails reliably, even as major providers stop using older, less secure authentication methods.
