A new wave of DSpace repositories with 4Science: The last 12 months have been intense for 4Science and the entire DSpace community. After the release of many DSpace 7 versions and DSpace 8, with 4Science leading in the number of hours contributed to the code, many institutions worldwide decided to partner with us for migrations or upgrades of their DSpace repositories.

Why 4Science?

Many institutions saw 4Science as the most reliable partner because of our lead position in the DSpace community and the number of certifications we hold (ISO 27001 certification, above all). Besides our lead position in the DSpace community, our collaborative approach and attentiveness to every institution’s needs and requirements made us the perfect partners for such intense and stressful efforts as the DSpace upgrade.

The institutions

A new wave of DSpace repositories with 4Science: More than 20 Institutions have chosen 4Science for migrations or upgrades in the last 12 months. 90 % of these institutions opted for an extended data model called DSpace-CRIS or DSpace-GLAM based on the type of material they host in their repositories. The extended DSpace data model allows these institutions a more scalable, tailored, interoperable, stable, performing, and secure platform. The institutions are from all around the world:

Upcoming projects

We do not stop here with the current live installations! At 4Science we are already working on many new projects that will kick off by the end of the year. Even most of the new projects, will implement the DSpace extension:

  • HEP Vaud – Haute école pédagogique du canton de Vaud
  • Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg
  • Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF)
  • Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI)
  • Nanyang Technological University  (NTU)
  • Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg (HAW)
  • HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU)
  • Fraunhofer – FIS
  • University of Basel

The DSpace DSpace-CRIS merger discussions

Many institutions decided to opt for a DSpace extended data model. Our experience with DSpace (more than two decades) shows that every institution needs to follow different processes, requirements, and policies. That is why the DSpace extended data model provided by 4Science better fits more than 90% of the institutions we support. The extended data model can be tailored to every use case based on the type of material and the purpose of the repository.

The DSpace community is actively exploring the possibility of a merger between DSpace and DSpace-CRIS so that the additional features and performances of DSpace-CRIS will become the community standard starting from DSpace 10. (DSpace leadership explores DSpace/DSpace-CRIS merger – 4Science)

This wave of new DSpace repositories with extended data models is another reason why the DSpace and DSpace-CRIS merger is needed to keep DSpace at the forefront of Open-Source repository solutions.

We cannot wait for the future of the community, with 4Science leading the way.
