Massachusetts State Library Embraces DSpace-GLAM. With a long and illustrious history that dates back to 1826, the Massachusetts State Library is embracing the future of digital archiving. With support from 4Science, the leader in open-source digital repository solutions, the library is making the exciting transition from its current DSpace platform to the more sophisticated DSpace-GLAM system.

Why the Upgrade?

The library has been hosting a variety of materials on DSpace, such as Acts and Resolves, legislative documents, and old photos. However, their digital assets’ increasing diversity and complexity need a more advanced solution.

To better manage and present its extensive digital resources, the State Library decided to upgrade to DSpace-GLAM.

Introducing DSpace-GLAM

An extension of the core DSpace platform, DSpace-GLAM was created primarily to satisfy the particular requirements of Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM).

This improved system has several significant benefits:

Extended Data Model: A broader range of entities, such as, people, events, concepts, places , fonds, can be managed with DSpace-GLAM. This adaptability makes it possible to describe the cultural setting in more detail.

Improved Visualization:  allows information to be explored through charts and maps and creating dynamic and interactive paths…

Better Interoperability: By adhering to critical international standards, the platform makes the sharing of information and integration with other GLAM platforms easier.

Specialized Addons: Features like the IIIF Image Viewer, which offers quick access to high-resolution images, Video/Audio Streaming, and OCR tools

can all be added to DSpace-GLAM for a better experience.

Benefits for the Massachusetts State Library

Massachusetts State Library Embraces DSpace-GLAM. The State Library intends to greatly improve its digital presence and services by implementing DSpace-GLAM:

Improved Cultural Heritage Representation: The expanded data model will allow more detailed and linked representations of Massachusetts’ rich history and cultural items.

Better User Experience: Thanks to sophisticated visualization capabilities, researchers and the general public will find it simpler to browse and comprehend the library’s digital resources.

Improved Discoverability: By adhering to international standards, the library’s resources will be more visible in the larger digital environment.

Future-Proofing: The modular design of DSpace-GLAM and its strong relationships with DSpace guarantees that the library can keep extending its digital capabilities and adapting to changing needs.

The Massachusetts State Library’s dedication to conserving and disseminating the Commonwealth’s cultural legacy will advance significantly with this migration. As the digital era progresses, organizations such as the State Library are setting the standard for utilizing technology to make our common past accessible and more engaging than ever before.
