The University of Tennessee’s TRACE Repository Is Now Live
The University of Tennessee has officially launched its new institutional repository, TRACE, based on the latest DSpace-CRIS version and hosted on AWS by 4Science.
Following a public RFP process, the University selected 4Science as its partner to migrate from Digital Commons to a more flexible, open, and future-proof solution.
The Benefits of DSpace-CRIS
The University of Tennessee, with the new DSpace-CRIS repository, will benefit from an open-source, modular, and future-proof solution. DSpace-CRIS is a more integrated and interoperable solution, making it easier to navigate for both administrators and end-users.
What makes this DSpace-CRIS implementation powerful?
The new TRACE repository includes many enhancements provided to improve both usability and research visibility:
🎨 UX Plus module
The module provides a collection of enhancements to DSpace, aiming to improve the User Experience for final users and repository administrators during their daily duties.
📊 Content & usage Statistic
This module brings enhancements and additional features to the default DSpace to monitor and understand the usage of the repository both in terms of content usage and from an administrative perspective.
🎥 Embedded audio & video streaming
A fully open-source streaming solution for media content directly within the repository.
Integration with SWORD protocol
enables automated deposit and exchange of digital content between external systems and the repository.
Why this matters
This great flexibility and modularity make DSpace-CRIS the best solution for any type of institution, regardless of size, type of material, or internal processes.
In addition, with the ongoing merger between DSpace and DSpace-CRIS, the University of Tennessee is currently benefiting from many out-of-the-box enhancements that will become part of the DSpace codebase only in a few years, making it an early adopter of what DSpace will look like.
A partnership we’re proud of
Working with the University of Tennessee has been a truly collaborative effort, and we’re proud to see TRACE now live and serving its community.
We look forward to continuing this partnership and supporting the evolution of an increasingly open and connected research ecosystem.
MIT Open Scholarship: New Name for Newly Upgraded DSpace@MIT
MIT Open Scholarship is a completely revamped and significantly upgraded version of MIT’s institutional repository, also known as DSpace@MIT. For more than two decades, DSpace@MIT has served as the premier digital home for the Institute’s research, housing theses, working papers, technical reports, published articles, and more.
4Science at Open Repositories 2026: Shaping the Future of Open Infrastructure
June has been a milestone month for the global open research community. The 4Science team attended Open Repositories 2026, presenting six contributions that coincided with a landmark moment: the Official Release of DSpace 10, the first concrete step of the long-awaited merger between DSpace and DSpace-CRIS.
We are excited to share the key insights, technical breakthroughs, and strategic vision we brought to the stage this year.

⚡ Challenges and Solutions for Reliable and Performant Repositories
Our COO Andrea Bollini’s presentation on reliable and performant DSpace repositories resonated strongly with the conference’s opening keynote, where Kathleen Shearer, Kazu Yamaji, and others discussed that repositories must be highly interoperable and provide reliable services to the research community.
🤖 The Dual Challenge of AI in Open Knowledge
Among the most discussed topics at OR2026 was the double-edged relationship between repositories and Artificial Intelligence.
On one side: how to embed AI capabilities to make repositories smarter — through recommendations, metadata enrichment, and semantic discovery.
On the other: the massive crawling challenge — AI agents aggressively harvesting knowledge from the very platforms that are the primary open source of that knowledge.
