4Science will attend the DSpace North America User meeting

There’s something really special about this community getting together in person, and the fact that it’s happening at Harvard’s Lamont Library, in the heart of Harvard Yard, makes it all the more exciting! A heartfelt thank you to Harvard Library and LYRASIS for making this possible, we genuinely can’t wait!

This is also the first time the North American DSpace community meets since DSpace 10 brought DSpace and DSpace-CRIS together into one unified platform. For us this is deeply personal: it’s the fruit of years of work, late nights, and a shared belief in what open repository infrastructure can be. Being in the room with the people who shaped this alongside us is going to be emotional, honestly 😊

Our Presentation

We will be presenting “Towards the integration of CORE into DSpace” – a conversation we care about a lot with CORE’s team, about how open infrastructure can genuinely work as one. CORE’s extraordinary aggregation of open access content meets our deep love for repositories, and the vision is simple: make research more visible, more connected, more open. Basically, bulding bridges instead of centralizing knowledge, because we believe in a distributed, collaborative future for scholarly infrastructure – and this talk is very much about that!

A greener Cloud Infrastructure with 4Science

At 4Science, we have been working hard to provide not only solutions but also environmentally friendly work practices.

That’s why we’ve introduced automatic idle shutdown for the test environments of our DSpaceWay and hosting solutions.

When a test environment is inactive, it is automatically powered down, eliminating unused computing resources. As soon as a user needs it again, the environment automatically starts with no manual intervention required.

How does it work?

As soon as a user needs it again, the environment begins the automatic startup process without any manual intervention. During startup, the user will see a loading page. Once this is finished, they will finally see the application and be able to start using it.

The result?

✅ Less infrastructure running in the background when not necessary

✅ Energy consumption reduced

✅ A cloud infrastructure that is really efficient

✅ User experience will have no impact

This supports our broader commitment to sustainability and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

4Science DSpace community contributions update August 2026

We are happy to share a summary of the contributions that 4Science has delivered to the DSpace Community during July and August 2026. For all DSpace users, these improvements are designed to make your experience smoother, more secure, and more reliable.

DSpace-CRIS Features Ported to DSpace 11 (release planned for 2027)

We continue to port DSpace-CRIS features as part of the merger between DSpace and DSpace-CRIS. These capabilities will be officially included in DSpace Release 11.0 (mid 2027), bringing functionality previously available only in DSpace-CRIS directly into the core platform.

Bulk Import from Excel File

One of the most requested capabilities will be available in DSpace 11: the ability to import items in bulk directly from an Excel file, via both the REST API and the user interface.

Configurable Homepage Options

🔗 Pull Request #12863

Repository administrators will have greater control over the homepage layout and content through new configuration options in the Angular frontend.

Infrastructure & Deployment: Docker Improvements

Deployment infrastructure has been improved, making it easier to install and maintain DSpace in modern containerized environments, both on-premises and in the cloud.

Optimizations to Docker build files and docker-compose configurations. This was already proven in production on DSpace-CRIS and has been ported to the DSpace codebase. This benefits any institution that runs or plans to run DSpace 10 in containers.

Now available DSpace-CRIS 2025.02.01: What’s New for You

We’re excited to share the highlights of the latest DSpace-CRIS 9 2025.02.01 release! This version brings meaningful improvements that benefit the entire DSpace ecosystem.

New Features & Improvements

Shared Workspace

The Shared Workspace experience has been significantly improved. Now, all members of a Collection’s Submitters group can view and manage every Workspace Item in that Collection, regardless of who created it. Non-submitter users registered as Authors can also see the “Other Workspace Items” menu with role-based permissions preserved.

Open Policy Finder Integration (Replaces SHERPA/RoMEO)

With the SHERPA/RoMEO API dismissed in May 2026, DSpace-CRIS now integrates with the Jisc Open Policy Finder (OPF) API. This includes:

  • A dedicated OPF step in the Publications submission process
  • OPF logo displayed in Authority search results
  • Performance improvements to avoid unnecessary pauses between requests

Performance & Scalability

  • Batch authorization API: A new configurable system reduces the number of requests needed to check user permissions, with a single endpoint returning multiple authorizations at once.
  • Optimized bitstream retrieval: Bundle-name filtering now happens at the database level via JPQL, eliminating N+1 lookups when resolving item bitstreams.
  • Improved Solr export/import tooling: Better handling of large datasets and varied input files.
  • Statistics loading improvements: Requests are now split into multiple sub-requests for specific usage reports, improving page load times.

CORE Identifier Support

Added support for CORE identifierswith a new identifier.core subtype and dedicated CORE icon rendering, expanding the range of persistent identifiers DSpace-CRIS can handle.

Audit Trail Enhancements

Ported improvements from DSpace to the Audit system (see Audit Trail feature – DSpace 10.x Documentation). New configuration options allow you to:

  • Explicitly enable/disable auditing
  • Skip workflow or workspace items from audit logging
